I write down thoughts, ideas, brainstorms in a notebook or binder I carry WAY before I put together a DRAFT of any sort... Helps me sort out good ideas and weed out bad ideas... also allows me to describe a real idea (location object or something interesting) to later be harvested into an idea to be placed in story.
I find working on the preliminary stuff first helps get a better first draft to the story also and allows me a little leeway for improvement of the later revisions during an "EDITING TIME"..
Also on that front when you work on "Drafts" just let yourself go and type away until you cannot type anymore... Putting down the story in order of your preliminary ideas... THEN go back and edit... Too much time is taken when you keep stopping and interrupting a good train of thought to edit yourself. I stopped doing that and found i was able to get more done writing by setting aside for each activity...
