1) As a toddler sat on Mom's lap during car rides. 2) When in middle school, one day a week, I would get up early, pack a lunch and frozen soda, peddle my bike to Belmont State Park, about 8 miles from home, and spend the day hanging out and fishing, I didn't come home until just before dinner. 3) in High School, we regularly went on 50+ mile bike trips to various points of interest here on Long Island. One particularly memorable trip was to Sagamore Hill, Teddy Roosevelt's home. We left in bright sunshine, but the weather turned bad, and we were in pouring rain at the worst time. Who knew that caliper brakes stopped working in the rain? 4) Went on an overnight camping trip, unbeknownst to our parents, who thought we were just at another house sleeping over. We set up camp close to where we entered the woods, someone must have reported our cooking fire. A State Trooper came to investigate. His response to finding us camping was, "You know if you were further back in the woods, no one would know you were here." He then supervised us in putting out the campfire, and we moved our camp to the other side of the river. Sometimes I wonder how we managed not to get kidnapped, or how we survived?!? |
