You are correct that the stats do not distinguish based on the time spent on the page. A millisecond view and a 10 minute read both count as 1 hit.

If you'd prefer less hits but more data, consider flipping the Access Restrictions on your item from "Make Public" to "Registered Users and Higher" as that eliminates the less informative outside visits.
