I also plan to hint at forgotten technology to help with the slightly stretched aspects of the story. One being the power supply; such a machine would need incredible amounts of power to open any such portal for any length of time.

My idea... strange crystals found under lost ancient ruin temples around the world. (a play on Star Trek)
