There have been some discussions on WDC about whether a writer's work has a theme. Some purists insist that the writing must have a theme. Reciting the seven elements: characters, plot, setting, theme, point of view, conflict, and tone. Therefore, a story without a theme is missing one of the key elements. Many writers dispute theme as an element of storytelling. My own view is that theme does not belong in the list of elements of story telling. I suggest that theme is sometimes internal to the writer and not really part of the story. But I do believe that every writer has a reason a motivation for what they are writing. If they don't want to call it a theme, who cares. |
