Yes, it's an em dash. Admittedly, sometimes I get lazy and just type two dashes instead, thus: -- without spaces on either side.

When I'm slightly less lazy, WDC has the ML command {emdash} which creates an em dash thus: —

From what I recall, MS Word automatically converts the double dash to the em dash. But don't take my word for it.
