To be honest, my dealings with publishers have not given me a consistent meaning of "hook." In fact, most use the term "pitch" from what I can gather.

There 3 types of pitch I've come across:

1) the "hook" example you gave, which is a modified blurb;

2) the "elevator pitch" which is where you have time it takes an elevator to go one floor to sell your book;

&

3) the "twitter pitch" (I guess "X pitch" now) where you have 280 characters to sell your book.

And there could well be others.

My recommendation is don't get too hung up on this sort of minutiae. Just write your work and make it the best it can be.
