What a great question! A parent can, and usually is, held responsible for civil damages their children cause. For instance, if a minor child damages someone's property, even accidentally, the parent can be held financially responsible for the repairs, but there is a limit as to how much. It used to be $2,000.00, but I don't know what it is today. It's a parent's responsibility to teach their children right from wrong, and although many parents either ignore this or abdicate that responsibility to others, the responsibility remains with the parent. Although the Crumbley case involves a much more important issue than financial, the same theory should apply. In the Crumbley case one parent bought the gun for a child with obvious mental issues, the other ignored the child's stated actions. So yes, I believe the verdict was correct.  |
