About half the Plant City Senior High class 1974 skipped class on Fridays at least once a semester. We would all meet at the Turkey Creek Rd Pits, old phosphate mines dug in the mid-40s. We never took bathing suits; most of us went in the buff, even the girls... though about half swam with their bras and panties. We made campfires and cooked hot dogs and sausages on palmetto frons. And there was our guy George Beard. He was a junior, only 17, but had a full beard and looked 25 with his hat on. Back then, it wasn't hard to buy beer and wine. And our parents did care if we stayed out late on the weekends, at least the boys. We had to get the girls home by midnight...It's a shame that those days are lost... there was rarely any trouble. Everyone knew each other; most of us had been together since first grade, and most of us had dated at one time or another. I was out in Texas in 1999 for our 25-year reunion... My 50th is coming this June... looking forward to the reunion.
