It had a mystery element... actually several. It was a mystery to her as to what "the Deed" actually entailed, and then a real mystery as to who was trying to kill her second husband (the hero in the story). They had to solve quite a few attacks before they figured it out. And then they had to prove it. And in trying to gain proof, it was necessary for her second husband to solve the mystery of who kidnapped his wife, where they brought her etc.
