I have a fear of deep water, and of space -- as in outer space. It's just too big, too much, too hopeless. I don't fear what might be in water (or space), just the vast emptiness and being alone in that emptiness.
I used to be phobic of spiders–I woke up with one on my face when I was in college and I slept with a sheet tucked all the way around my body and over my head for the next three months I was so freaked out. Now I can handle small spiders now, even physically. Thinking of spiders as females or mothers instead of calling them "he" or "it" helped. Take from that what you will. The bigger ones I now rescue and take outside or off my porch. Garden Spiders (or Orb Weavers) fascinate me–I can watch them building their webs for hours. Such beautiful, bizarre creatures.
