The Fall of the Berlin Wall. On November 9, 1989, I was six and watching the Tagesschau, the 8 PM news on ARD (think PBS in the US), with my parents. They showed live footage of the Trabbi-parade from east to west, people crying and hugging, dancing on and tearing down first parts of the wall, the overwhelmed border patrol just letting people pass over... you know what I mean. Now comes what made it stick in family history. Very UN-typical for the serious channel, they played David Hasselhoff's "I've been looking for freedom" with the footage. Me to my Mom: "What are they all fussing about – the music isn't that good." My Dad: "Kindermund tut Wahrheit kund." I'm wondering how Günter Schabowski felt about single-handedly "destroying" the GDR by making the also infamous press statement that defacto led to Reunion only hours before The Fall. Coffee? => Have a great day. |
