I want to say it was me who came up with the idea but I don't remember if I ever said anything privately or publicly. Mostly it just seems like the idea that the first person copied in a mask acts as the base and then any other faces added are just building on that makes the most sense. It's like playing a modded video game. Depending on the mods, the game can be changed very extensively but it's still the same game at its core, even if it looks different or new features have been added.
Face mixing also was never really used all that frequently for quite a long time so there was never much of a reason for it to come up.
