I think protests accomplish nothing other than generate publicity in the media (in our country). In our country, a lot of protests are politically-driven so I think we Malaysians in general just have a good laugh at the silly things that they do then move on. We did become part of the Bersih rally when the corruption was so bad in Malaysia and the people were protesting for a clean democratic government. My hubby and I were basically protest tourist. We were just there to see it because when you talk about unity, I think that is the most united we have been so far. Even those overseas who couldn't join us were having their own Bersih rally in front of the Malaysian embassies in different countries. Those were interesting time. Basically, they were run by lawyer-politicians who were demanding for several things from the government. That was a successful protest. The ones to generate publicity I meant specifically the ones that are "protesting" for Muslim rights for this and that. I think they are probably hired to create distraction from real issues in our country, but that's just my thought (and many others). So, do protests work? It depends on their motives. Usually no. Except for the Bersih rally, the others seemed pretty pointless and more of a circus show.
