Cryptids are always going to be a bit of a challenge in BoM/TWS. The story needs them because it includes the Stellae as antagonists, and the Stellae need to see Will as one of many possible challenges and not the only one to them. But then come technical questions like the ones above, because there are technical aspects to the magic in BoM, and then the question becomes how those technicalities apply to the cryptids.

That's my only real comment. As a practical matter, all questions about the cryptids, their nature, and how they "fit" with other things is handled on a case-by-case basis, usually by the seat of the pants.
