I'm really glad you have pointed out how tech can be used to help nonverbal people (of all ages) gain some independence. I actually got some pushback when I pointed out how tech is allowing people to defy labels such as "profoundly autistic" (which is a rantworthy subject in itself). I do need to respond to that email, at least after I finish watching a video from CBS where they interview a nonverbal autistic woman.
