I cheat, big time.

During the draft and redraft phases, I use very short identifiers (e.g. Zen, Ann etc.) because I'm just lazy. As their character evolves - and it always evolves during the writing - I make notes on possible suitable names. After the editing is done, I use a global search & replace (which includes the character sheets and world-building notes).
