Wow Dave, This article is very thorough and well written. Thank you for posting it. I used to write stories when I was very young. From the age of 9, I started writing poems. I have always loved writing. I would have to say that when I started writing poems, they were just for me. I kept them private for years. I would write about secret loves and deepest fears. When I wrote about abuse, I would hide the real meaning under cleverly disguised stories (so the perpetrator wouldn't know). That's when I discovered that I could write about one thing and have it mean something else much deeper. These are my favourite poems to write. I have to say that I still write mostly for myself, because I have so many emotions that have to be expressed. But when I put my "babies" out there, a part of me gets deep satisfaction from knowing my poems are being read.
