We had a guinea pig... Well, we had a few but there was one who stood out. He was that rare thing, a brindle piggie, and was of a sober and serious outlook on life. Piggies do have very different personalities and our brindle friend was clearly of exceptional intelligence. Not for him the boisterous antics of his fellow piggies - no, he had more important matters on his mind. I used to joke that he was writing a piggie opera called Pigoletto and, for all I know, it may have been true. His name was Squeaky (sometimes known as The Squeak), after all, and he could convey a lot in that squeak. Squeaky was always a pivot within the family, all of us establishing our own relationship to his wise and benevolent presence. He lasted longer than all the other piggies and, when he died, he left an empty space in our hearts that still lingers, years afterwards. His is not a tale of wild exploits or comical events, but is worth telling for the light he shone upon the importance even of guinea pigs. For a while there, The Squeak was the uniting force within the family. |
