You could try working on her background story and see where she leads you? Some thoughts I had (but she's your character, so listen to her, not me) - a journalist could also be called into investigate a cold case and/or rumors of the diamond resurfacing. Either a journalist or a detective would have lots of opportunities to get themselves in trouble (which is a good thing in narrative fiction!)
