I agree with your conclusion that the 5-point outline template is easier for those who aren't outliners. It allows for a lot more flexibility later, during the writing stage, to just include a vague set of directions (go north, then east until you reach the coast). On the other hand, those who do better with detailed planning need a GPS, Google Maps and a navigation system that calculates every meal and potty break along the road trip. (Eg, the Hero's Journey,)
