Call it 'religion' or 'spirituality' or 'moral class' - children do need to learn the importance of gratitude and doing good to others. These are the basic principles being taught.
The problem arises when the 'religious' aspect takes over and names (like 'whom' you pray to) or rituals become more important than values.
There is energy in gratitude. There is comfort in surrender. There is health for all in doing good to others. This is what the outcome needs to be, whichever deity is being invoked, if any particular deity at all.
