I've been to live ameatuer plays only. My best experience at one was called "The Giving Tree" and I don't remember where or when. It was set during the time of the Underground Railroad and in this one house that hid people (the wife) her husband was a member of the KKK. She kept this little pine tree out all year round and decorated it with ornaments she made depicting world leaders. She would hang pictures of people of all races, but hide the ones she had to when her husband was at home. The last scene she wss sneaking out a family and the little boy ran back up to the house from the tunnel to save her tree from the blaze. The epilogue they gave told of how the boy kept the tree with him while he grew and he turned out to be MLK.
