Maybe it was just because I lived out in the South Western United States. Maybe it was because I was raised by my mom who was incredibly into preserving nature. Either way, it seemed like when I was young there were less cigarette butts, empty liquor containers, dirty diapers and trash on the ground than there is now.
I never used to see any trash thrown into our yard. Now it seems like the neighborhood kids and drunks have mistaken our property for a trash dump. I've even had to pick hypodermic needles out of the grass in front of our house.(and no, they weren't for insulin.)
