Mala. It's a type of chilli that is currently very popular here especially in hot pots and among college students. It originates from Sichuan, China and it has been around for a long time. It's just that for these past few years, suddenly, it is everywhere. Instead of using regular chilli in hotpots, they are using mala! It's horrible. It has this really pungent taste, when you smell it, it's so spicy that you choke.
Some people like the kick. To me, it has this very strange taste to it that is different from regular chilli. I don't really know how to describe it.
Malaysians like to take their food with chilli. The chilli can vary from belacan, sambal, to chilli sauce from the bottle - like Kampung Koh, Thai Chilli sauce - chilli oil, garlic chilli with a dash of lime and sour plum... many, many kinds. These days, mala is also added to the mix. I believe it can ruin a meal. But that is just my individual taste.
I think there are people out there who actually like it which is why it is in demand...
