For me, it was Star Trek: The Motion Picture. By this, I mean the novelization of the first Star Trek movie. This was the first novel that I ever read just for the sake of reading as entertainment. As much as I loved the original TV show, Star Trek, the movie was a bit tedious to watch, and even still, I don't think it's the worst thing ever, but it is kind of bland. The novel adaptation, though, is so much better.
Technically, the first thing I ever read that I recall enjoying just for the sake of reading was Inherit the Wind, but that is technically a play and not a traditional novel/story regarding how it is written. Before that, I never truly enjoyed reading as a kid, but for some reason, those two books instilled in me that reading just for the sake of reading could be enjoyable.
