I think a name should spring to mind, no matter the unfortunate controversy that would haunt his legacy -
Michael Joseph Jackson.
Period.
I respect the Beatles - heck even Michael did (let's not get into the publishing rights situation) - but as a young girl growing up in West Africa, we had no idea who the Beatles were. We didn't know who Elvis was either.
But Michael? Yes.
I am not kidding when I say that you could walk into a village, with no electicity, save for a battery-operated radio, and Michael's music would fill the airwaves.
If the Beatles led the way, then Michael would become the blueprint of what popular music has become since his official adult debut album - Off the Wall.
His influence while alive and, even in death, is unprecedented. And no matter the erasure, or negativity, or whatever else people wish to tarnish his image with, his contributions to music, dance, and entertainment in general, should never be ignored or forgotten.
