I was at an Auxiliary Field of Eglin Air Force Base near Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for an exercise during Hurricane Frederic in September of '79. We had to stop field operations, return to the main cantonment area and tape up the windows of the barracks we were occupying. We then crammed a couple hundred soldiers into the clinic for the night. We never lost power, none of the windows were broken, and the amount of debris on the ground was minimal. The Gulf Coast areas of Alabama and Mississippi, on the other hand, almost certainly recall the night with nowhere close to fond memories.
The Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989 hit much closer to home. Our quarters were spared, but houses right across the street took some significant damage.
