The Lovely Day

“Let’s try it again.”

Mr. Renolds stood before the line of students. Mrs. Gallagher’s kindergarten class. Jeremy, picking his nose; Sandy twirling her hair which looked like it hadn’t gotten brushed this morning. Tim Clancy standing as if he was paying attention, however Mr. Renolds knew if he called his name Tim wouldn’t even blink. He was always off in space.

This was their first workout class. Up until now they’d mostly played ball, ran around, jumped up and down, anything to absorb some five-year-old energy so Mrs. Gallagher could have some quiet to actually teach.

It was a theory. Mr. Renolds had been teaching kindergarten physical education for some time. Kindergarten students never run out of energy, period. But in a way it did work. They learned to stand in line, listen to the speaker (except for Tim so far…) and try things over and over until they finally get them right. Mr. Rogers was proud of what he taught, and happy that the kids learned more than just staying physically active.

Tim however… He always looked like he was absorbing it all. Mr. Renolds wondered if he was like this in the classroom too. He decided then and there to talk to Mrs. Gallagher about him! Of course, by the end of the day, he had forgotten.

As the class moved on, so did Mr. Renolds. Thirty years later, retired and trying to get a loan from the bank, guess who he ran into! Tim Clancy! President of the bank! They talked and laughed for an hour about Tim’s early childhood and lack of listening to the actual teacher. They both thought it was hilarious! And the fun memories, by his kindergarten teacher, definitely got Mr. Renolds that loan!

It was a lovely day for them both, indeed.
