The first waterbuck I ever saw. I was fooled the way everyone is when they first hear the waterbuck's call - I thought it was someone whistling at me. And, when I walked towards it, it looked like the head and shoulders of a man standing in the tall grass. And then, when close, it turned sideways and walked away, unafraid. I saw the white circle around its tail and knew instantly that it was a waterbuck. But, just before it turned, our eyes had met in a meeting of somehow unafraid souls in mutual contemplation of the other.
I'd like to have that moment repeated - with any wild animal.
