A turkey trying to fly up hill. I was sitting in the woods back when I worked in Shenandoah National Park. There was this loud flapping noise that I was certain was actually underbrush being crunched by a massive black bear or something.(I'd already seen at least ten in the months before this encounter.)
It got closer and I saw this stupid bird fluttering its wings for all it was worth. Only to maintain a height of half a foot above the undergrowth. It occasionally flopped down to the ground but then tried to get airborne again.
No idea what scared it so badly. Until then, I didn't even know turkeys could fly.
