I don't know why it wouldn't have worked (I checked, and there is indeed a member with the username pendropped and handle pendroppedbeneath), but Merit Badges are for authors, while Awardicons are for individual items or portfolios. So the story title should be irrelevant if you were trying to send a Merit Badge.

If that doesn't clarify things, perhaps someone else has insight into why it wouldn't work.
