Update: Surviving (2025.09.26)
by Tobber Author IconMail Icon
In many way, this became the kind of "just got to survive" kind of week I predicted it would. There were layoffs at my wife's work, my wife being sick, my youngest daughter being sick, and all of it just piled into a monster that drained all of our energy. Taking that into account, I am actually pretty happy with how my goals turned out.

Somehow, my writing didn't suffer all that much. Though, all the other stuff, reading, exercise, eating healthy, etc. definitely did. However, there were also some stuff I didn't bother putting on the list, because I thought they would be impossible to achieve this week. Stuff like doing a WYRM review, participating in the European Codex lunch and our new Codex online write-together. But I did all those things!

All-in-all, it was a rough week, but ultimately also a productive one.

Things won't be back to normal next week, but hopefully they will be less crazy.

Core Goals

*Boxcheck* Write, edit, or outline every day: It is perhaps a bit of a stretch to say I got any writing done in the weekend, as both Saturday and Sunday only included a brief idea/brainstorming exercise in the evening. Still, compared to just two months ago when I never did any writing I the weekend, it is definitely something. So, yeah, I’ll count this as a success (including the weekend as well).

*Boxcheck* Get exercise: I got in the bare minimum, which isn't ideal, but then again, there's a reason I set the bar where I did, knowing I would have weeks like this one once in a while.

*Box* Stop snacking: Nope. I fell in already at the start of the week and a had few lapses since then. This week was, as predicted, a rough one in many ways, though. So I'm okay with this, provided I can get back on the horse next week.

*Boxcheck* Do vocal exercises: As with the exercise goal, I did the bare minimum. Now, I just have to hope I can do better next week.

Stretch Goals

*Boxcheck* Do edits: I completed edits for one of the three short stories I wrote last month.

*Boxcheck* Read short stories: I read two stories published in Uncanny Magazine and on in Metastellar. That has me just crossing the minimum bar I set for this goal.

*Boxcheck* Read “new” magazines: I read a story in Metastellar for the first time, so that's a goal achieved.

*Boxcheck* Submit short stories: I got one rejection last weekend, and I managed to submit that story to another magazine this week.

N/A Do Fantasticon work: I got lucky in that there wasn't any con-related work for me this week. Though, that is also, at least partly, my own "fault", because I did all the work up front last week. *Smile*
