Bad Date by Ellery Lloyd | 58 pages This was a bonus short read from the Amazon First Reads program this month (last month? I can't remember), about a "globally famous actress" who is unlucky in love because her boyfriends keep disappearing. She enlists the help of her friend and confidante to join a dating app under an assumed identity, and the man she connects with has secrets of his own. Honestly, for a short read, this felt like it was trying to do way too much too fast. I'm not usually one to complain about fast pacing, but this was almost too fast, jumping around to different points of view in an effort to keep the mystery moving. I would have preferred to read a short piece about any one of those things (a woman whose boyfriends keep disappearing, a famous actress who joins a dating site under an assumed name, or a dating app story where the person the protagonist connects with is more than they seem), but all three together just kind of made for a narrative mess in the span of less than a hundred pages. As it is, it's a fine, quick read that you can finish in an hour. That said, this might be the first time in a long time that I've said I wished a story was longer! ![]() |
