Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. He wasn't/isn't necessarily famous, but he should more well known than he is. He was an early pioneer of antiseptic techniques in the late 1800s. He was one of the first to make a connection between sanitization and preventing the spread of disease. Very few of his fellow doctors believed him, many thought he was crazy and Dr. Semmelweis would sadly pass away in an asylum after a nervous breakdown suffered while defending his work on the subject.
