I have use Grammarly in the past, and found that if I ran the same bit of text through it, I could get two different results. This is indicative of poorly trained ML. In addition, if I selected British English Grammar, it made far too many mistakes to be useful and frequently recommended corrections that came from the American Grammar stable. It is definitely better at American Grammar than British. I also found that if I worked hard, I could eliminate all the errors it picked up, but at the expense of readability. The primary purpose of grammar is to make things more readable, so in this regard, Grammarly was an utter failure. I'm sure they have improved things since then, but now I know both British and American grammars much better (and the differences between them). My advice is to take what Grammerly tells you with a pinch of salt and to use your own instincts to tell you if it is leading you down the path that leads under the bridge where the troll hides. Learning grammars doesn't take much effort, and is actually easier as an adult (one of the few things that are). In the end, it would be a lot cheaper. |
