Good ideas. I also write for a paper - the local one here that's been around since 1908. It's one of the few independent papers in the state of Montana.
Anyhoo, I usually try to connect with the person I'm interviewing by listening closely to what they say. Sometimes they state a fact that you can discuss. Usually people love to talk about themselves, their families, and perhaps a cause they are passionate about.
Eventually you will get to the reason for the interview.
I believe you have to know the right topics to discuss. And once you have that key, the interview flows smoothly.
