I don't remember the artist but back in 2014. There was this one song "Say Something (I'm Giving Up On You)"
It was musical emotional manipulation at its worst. If the singer/songwriter had really wanted to break up/give an ultimatum to their partner, then don't make the rest of the world suffer through it! Also, could they have come up with more lyrics than "Say Something I'm Giving Up On You!"
They never explain why, they never explain what this imaginary partner is supposed to say. They just wheedle the listener to death with their whiny request.
Unfortunately, the song was popular around the time I was engaged to my boyfriend. I was terrified he'd say "I'm giving up on you." So I would scream a little on the inside every time it came on the radio or Muzack in the store. Unfortunately my niece with a severe intellectual disability loved that song and made her sister sing it to her almost every night after my Husband had just died.
