I'll bail out now as soon as I feel it's become a slog.

Books I've plodded through to the end despite them being extremely hard work include Dracula, The Count Of Monte Cristo and The LA Quartet by James Ellroy (the movie LA Confidential was based on the third book). Never again.

I got about half-way through Ghormenghast when I found I just couldn't face another page - I should have called a halt much earlier. My personal record for dumping a book was Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre - I barely got a dozen pages into that one.
