If a book irritates me with its style, I won't get much further than a few pages into it, no matter the reputation of the writer. It can be a thing as minor as too many really hard to remember names (most of the Russian authors do this) or so awful that the sins are too many to count - doesn't matter, I quickly reach a point beyond which I cannot go. So I don't have a set limit, such as a chapter or number of pages. If it's unreadable to me, I see no point in continuing.
