It used to be that the entire family getting together was the best part; the feast came in second. I had five brothers and a sister, and we had quite an age gap, so while we younger kids were still in school, the older siblings had families of their own. But, in time, family get-togethers never included everyone, and the grand feasts my grandparents prepared stopped when my grandma got too old to entertain us all. After I had a family, the emphasis was to have holidays my children would cherish and remember. Once they were grown and had families of their own, it all changed again. Nowadays, holidays are not a big deal. My wife and I travel and visit family as we desire. Why wait for a specific day? The same holds for all the wonderful dishes we once enjoyed only on holidays. Why wait? Christmas is still a holiday my wife and I look forward to. She loves to decorate for Christmas, and I enjoy helping a little and watching her transform our home into a merry Christmas dwelling. We also enjoy buying and wrapping gifts for our dogs and watching them, much like young children, tear into the package to get the new toy inside. Of course, my wife and I also exchange gifts.
