I agree with this completely and went back and forth in development between a "true" WYSIWYG and some visual differences for better usability.

The new default for the editor is to show usernames instead of handles when converting to tags. In addition, the tag rendering is a more configurable setting in settings allowing username or handle display, as well as handling of rendered tags in sets. This would allow one to collaspe the larger tags, like images and photos, while keeping other more visually useful tags, like items and posts (where the title is generally more helpful than the number), rendering.
