There's a couple of ways to access the word count for an item. Open the item you need the word count (WC) for and click on the gear icon in the top right corner.Scroll down until you see Word Count. Click on that.

You can also see a WC for your item while in the edit mode. It will be located at the bottom of your edit box along with a character count and a Preview button.

Most contest hosts prefer entries to list the WC at the end of the story.
