I have frequent arguments with the entire world over the excellence of Bob Dylan's singing. I am confronted with any number of highly colourful similes to the qualities of his voice (strangled cats seems to be a popular opinion) but nothing alters my view on the matter. The fact is that his voice and delivery is by far the most effective vehicle for his songs - all of which are celebrated for their brilliance in other aspects. Other singers may be pretty and hit the right notes, but Bob cuts to the heart of the matter. And I still think that Bob does a much better rendition of All Along the Watchtower than the sainted Jimi's version. |
