Greets, This is our version of the captcha systems like Google, Recaptcha and Cloudflare provide... except rather than pay someone else for the service, I've implemented it directly in our own servers. When the site is under heavy load (like DDOS attacks, persistent bots, etc), the servers defend themselves with a simple humanity check for new visits. Members logged in have already proven themselves to be human by logging in and so they are no challenged. Likewise, completing the verification once creates a session that remembers and doesn't re-challenge a visitor over and over. The humanity check is a simple, non-load inducing page which the servers can send out quickly, without getting bogged down. Pages like our item listings, portfolios, item views, etc can create very heavy loads with all their database calls and page generation code when thousands of bots converge on the site at one time. [Edit to add: I've added an exclusion for the main index and logout pages, as those are low load pages to begin with and would have cleaned up the view for you a bit on the logout.] Hope this helps, ~~SM |
