OK, let's see if I've got this anything like correct having skimmed through the google results:

ASCII chars = 1 byte, 30 such chars are permitted, therefore max field length is 30bytes.

Thai script is within the BMP, and uses 3bytes per char. in UTF-8.

So a maximum of 10 thai script chars (or some combination of Ascii & UTF to the 30b max, e.g. 15 & 5, respectively)?

Edit: Yes, that seems to track
