You explained your question clearly. Portfolio folders work as locations... rather than categories or tags. Each story can have only one location in your portfolio, so placing it in a folder determines where it appears. The same story cannot appear in multiple folders while remaining a single item.

I would not recommend creating duplicate copies, since each copy would be a separate item with its own comments, ratings, and updates. Instead, you could create a writing item for each theme or category and add links to the original stories. That would give readers multiple ways to find your work while keeping only one copy of each story.
