Sorry for any confusions here but the editor has no problem with "hard" return. See here:

In terms of whitespace - that is pressing a lot of spacebars - neither the old or new editor save "whitespace". That's a web standard kind of thing. You can not just press spacebar a lot - in either old or new editor, they collapse to a single space. For that, you can use the "Creative Tools" -> "Preformatted Text" which uses the {pre}{/pre} tags. But keep in mind with that if you change screensize (or people view your work on mobile vs desktop), the pre is unforgiving.

In terms of the WritingML help, if you're using the legacy editor, there's a ? in the toolbar that allows direct access to the old WritingML help menu. [Edit to add: I've added the WritingML Help back towards the bottom of the "Tools & Help" menu]

Since the new editor released about 8 or 9 months ago, you're the first to report and issue with line breaks not holding. I'm happy to try to work through that issue with you, but it's not a sitewide editor problem (see my example above)... so we'll need to work together to figure out what's going on in your specific case...
