Part-time writing with an eye on the future

Like some others, i love writing, but have an equally (possibly more) satisfying day job, but love spending my nights tapping away at me keyboard. I'm not planning to quit my day job any time soon (it gives me many of my inspirations for shorts) but i'm still curious about being paid to write and would love to be in a position to write professionally after I retire.

Can anyone offer a newbie some insight on writing as a truly part-time career?
