For the second time that night it was the doorbell, no doubt ushering another group of trick-or-treaters. You realize that this may be your salvation! Without you to get the door, one of your sisters would come down, see you in the bowl, and help them. You couldn't help put smile at your serendipity.
DING!
As the doorbell rings, you hear hurried footsteps and a frustrated sigh, definitely Clara.
"Come on, stupid Davey! This is his job, now where is he?" You hear Clara's voice as she calls out.
"I'm down here!" You yell standing up.
At first when you see Clara's hand reaching down, you think you've found your salvation. It's only when Clara's hand, much like a crane claw, clamps down on the candy around you do you see you might be in trouble. Her fingers lift up from the bowl, trapping you among a variety of sweets, before maneuvering over the awaiting child's bag.
Just before Clara drops you, you manage to get a glimpse at the trick-or-treater. To your horror, its Desiree, the nine year-old African-American girl who took great enjoyment in annoying you on a daily basis. In your quick glimpse you also notice her wearing a witch's hat as a part of her costume. Just then Clara's hand releases you and the candy sending you down into the abyss of Desiree's candy bag.
You land amongst a meager helping of candy, meaning Desiree has just begun her trip around town. The opening to the bag is closed and you are left in darkness as your unwitting captor walks to the next house, steadily taking you farther and farther into unknown territory.
Since you aren't anxious to find out what Desiree would do to you at three-inches tall, you lie back against the slope of a Hersey's Kiss and start thinking about a way out. Your thoughts are soon interrupted as the bag opens.
